Trauma Therapy

Are you living in fear of the past, while worrying about the future?

Do you feel stuck, unable to go on with your life?

Does anxiety get in your way and fill your day with constant worry?

Not getting what you want?

Feeling tired of the way things are going in your life?

Are you worrying too much about the future instead of enjoying the present?

You may be exposed to trauma in many forms. The causes of trauma can include childhood abuse or neglect, racial or ethnic discrimination, domestic violence, and other traumatic events.

Childhood Abuse or Neglect

Childhood trauma is a broad term for any type of significant experience that is frightening, painful and/or shaming. Childhood trauma can occur in the form of physical, sexual or emotional abuse, bullying or neglect. Children who are exposed to adverse childhood experiences are at an increased risk for developing psychiatric illness such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) later in life.

Racial or Ethnic Discrimination

Racial trauma is a term coined by Dr. Joy DeGruy. The result of racism and racial discrimination, this form of trauma is emotional, physical and spiritual damage caused to people of color by others blinded by their own racial bias. Racial trauma is when a person’s identity as a racial/ethnic minority is challenged by actions (or lack thereof) in every day life. Racial trauma can lead to emotional responses that differ from person to person and include: sadness, anger, frustration, fear, isolation, grief, depression and numbness.

Domestic Violence

The National Domestic Violence Hotline defines domestic violence as a pattern of abusive behavior used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner, family member or caretaker. This abuse can include physical and sexual attacks, emotional and psychological abuse, economic deprivation and property destruction.
